So I am applying for a job with a telecommunications company and I heard that they use DOS. Does anyone know if Jaws works with it? I have a feeling it doesn't but I wanted to ask you guys to see if you know anything about it.
Thanks
well actually it can be made to work with it but it's not quite straightforward. when I worked for a car insurance company I had problems with their system which is a dos based one because the screen reading software I was using used up too much memory on my computer and their system kept crashing as a result. In order to rectify the problem, the system was installed on a windows nt platform and ran through a dos window which I accessed via jaws. so .. yes it can work with dos, but you can't just install jaws on a dos machine and hope it'll work.
You can use JFW in a DOS box within Windows, but, if you're actually running DOS, get a DOS screen reader. For Instance, JAWS for DOS is available, free of charge, on the Freedom Scientific site. My preferred DOS screen reader is called Tinytalk. Another thing: these old products usually work only with hardware synthesizers, such as the Dectalk Express or Doubletalk LT. You can use one of the old Blazie note takers, such as the Braillenspeak, as an external speech box.
Good Luck,
Dave
Thanks for all the imformation I will check it out.
Asap is another dos screen reader that's been around for years, and from what I've seen of it via main menu, it's pretty good, and I believe that window bridge is still available if you look hard enough for it.
Oh, ASAP is good, but I wouldn't recommend it's Windows version.
Hey Witchcraft: I love your tag line; and, yah, I concur re: ASAW; had to use it for a time. Boy, is it "chatty"! Is GWMicro still selling Vocal-eyes; or, have they followed Freedom, and put it into the public domain?
Cheers,
Dave
Dos rules, gui sucks.
Doss sucks but Windows XP rules. It's loads, loads better. Dos was the sad little outfit I was using when I started Secondary School nearly 12 years ago. It's extinct, nothing supports DOS operating systems any more, so no wonder the system at the car factory/company keeps crashing lol. My advice to anyone still using DOS, for their own sakes, is "drop it" and get a PC with Windows XP on it. I've had my current laptop for six years and that has Windows Millenium on it, and the one I had before that had Windows 98 on it
Dos is over, Windows is broken but Mac will triumph over all...
Also on the dolphin website www.dolphinuk.co.uk you can find hal light which is a dos screen reader and it's free but you will neeed an apollow synthesiser.
Sometimes i miss dos. I was using word perfect 51 and i was using qbasic to compose litle melodies. It was fun. But with dos we couldn't do things that we can do with windows. First with dos only one program can run at the time, also i don't think there are sound editors for dos or if they are i don't think they are accessible.
